Before smudged there was smouched (blotted, smutched). And before smooch there was smouch (kiss, or buss – kiss in a boisterous manner).
The word origins of the smouches are unrelated but the current association between smudged (think lipstick) and smooching is what caught my eye here.
Between the two sits another smouch (to scam, swindle). Cynics of today will probably pick up what the cynics of yesterday were putting down there.
Ps does anyone have a recipe handy for the culinary delights of smotheration?
